The Bibliotheca Alexandrina
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is an Egyptian library with international dimensions, seeking to recapture the spirit and heritage of the original ancient Library of Alexandria. The BA is considered much more than a library, rather it is a beacon of knowledge and cultural diversity for Egypt and the World.
The BA comprises the main library, which holds millions of books, six specialized libraries, four museums, thirteen academic research centers, fourteen permanent exhibitions and the only copy of the internet archive outside the U.S. borders. The BA welcomes more than 1.5 million visitors a year.
Our Digital World
“Our Digital World” is one of the Library’s permanent contemporary exhibitions, open freely to the public, showcasing the most intriguing state-of-the-art digital projects done in collaboration with international libraries and institutions, such as the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute. The exhibition is divided into different sections; a section for projects documenting the history of modern Egypt, one for the digitization projects of valuable and significant books such as Description de L’Egypte, and another for scientific projects and virtual applications.
Since 2015, the BA has installed the Inside Explorer table permanently to “Our Digital World” exhibition, to be the first institution in Africa and the Middle East displaying it. The Inside Explorer is considered a fundamental attraction in the exhibition, where it caught the attention of the BA patrons, especially the unique 3D model of the mummy of the Egyptian priest Neswaiu. The visitors are allowed to explore the mysteries of the mummification through a very informative description for all parts of the 3D model. In addition, the table also displays several human anatomy models which interests those in the medical field.
